Water shortage after main bursts

Residents in south London have been warned to expect reduced water supply following a burst water main.

Engineers are at the site in Tooley Street, London Bridge, trying to isolate and switch off the pipe, Thames Water said.

The utility company warned that residents in south-east and south-west London could experience low water pressure because of the incident.

Tooley Street and Borough High Street have been closed off.

'Knock-on effect'

"We have got as many people down there as possible isolating and switching the main off so that flooding in the area is reduced," said a Thames Water spokesman.

"However, we think there's going to be a knock-on effect for residents."

He added: "At this stage we don't know how many people will be affected and how widespread the problem is."

Motorists are being advised to avoid the area.
