Police capture escaped rapist

Terrence O'Keefe

Armed officers have arrested a rapist who escaped from a secure hospital in London two months ago.

Terrence O'Keefe, 39, was detained by police in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, on Thursday morning.

O'Keefe, who is serving a life sentence for rape and is a secure patient at Lambeth Hospital, fled while being treated at King's College Hospital.

An inquiry was launched by Lambeth Hospital as it was the second time in three years O'Keefe had escaped.

O'Keefe, who went on the run on 15 February, was arrested in Ordnance Road at 1100 BST and is being held at a police station in Norfolk.

Great Yarmouth Supt Jo Parrett, said: "This was a carefully planned and professional operation involving specialist firearms and tactical units from the constabulary.

"The man, who has committed very serious offences in the past and has been wanted for some time after escaping from custody elsewhere in the country, is now locked up again."

In 2005, O'Keefe also escaped from the accident and emergency unit at King's College Hospital.

South London and Maudsley NHS Trust (SLaM), which runs Lambeth, previously said O'Keefe had been escorted at all times.

SLaM and the King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust also reviewed procedures as part of the inquiry.
