Climate march arrives in London

Greta Scacchi with Cut the Carbon marchers in Cardiff Climate change campaigners marching across the UK have arrived in London for the final leg of their demonstration.

The Cut the Carbon march, organised by the charity Christian Aid, left Northern Ireland on 14 July.

The 18 core walkers - some from as far afield as El Salvador, Bangladesh and Kenya - are staying with local families along their route.

Their climate protest is aimed at businesses and MPs.

They walked through Kingston-upon-Thames in south-west London on Sunday.

1,000 miles

They will then go on Monday from Battersea to central London visiting the House of Bishops in Lambeth, Downing Street and London mayor Ken Livingstone at City Hall.

On Tuesday, the demonstrators will march their final mile to the London Stock Exchange, where a rally will be held followed by a service at St Paul's Cathedral.

It is thought by then the marchers will have covered 1,000 miles.

Caroline Mead, area staff member for Christian Aid in Surrey, said: "Climate change is the most serious threat to humanity.

"[We must] tackle climate change by reducing carbon emissions, through individual actions and by putting pressure on the UK government to pursue climate-friendly national and international policies."
