Sex attacker appeal prompts calls

Reconstruction of an attack using an actor Police hunting a serial sex attacker dubbed the "UK's most wanted man" are following up fresh leads after an appeal on Crimewatch.

Almost 100 incidents involving elderly men and women are being investigated.

The Metropolitan Police's Operation Minstead team has been hunting the rapist and burglar for eight years.

Detectives received more than 150 calls, with 60 names being suggested, after giving an "amazingly detailed picture" of the man on Monday.

Regular job

The man has been linked to four rapes and 24 other sexual assaults during 98 break-ins in London since 1990.

The attacks have been concentrated in south-east London, including areas of Shirley, Forest Hill, Orpington, Coulsdon and Warlingham.

During some attacks the suspect has mentioned Brighton to victims and police believe he may have a connection with that area.

Det Insp Nick Chalmers said the attacker could be a man who not even neighbours or close family would recognise as a criminal.

Forensic investigations

He also said that investigations had uncovered several important new clues such as "the fact that he may ride a motorcycle and almost certainly has a regular job".

The suspect is described as a black man, in his late 30s, with a well-spoken soft voice and an athletic build.

Forensic investigations in the US have shown he originates from the Windward Islands in the Caribbean.

A reward of £40,000 has been offered for information leading to the attacker's arrest and conviction.
