Future of power station decided

Battersea Power Station The future of one of London's most iconic landmarks has finally been decided - after years of delay.

Wandsworth Council granted planning permission for the £90m plans for Battersea Power Station at its planning applications committee on Thursday.

The plans - presented by owners Parkview International - include residential flats and a leisure complex for the Grade II-listed building.

Work on the site is expected to begin early next year.

Committee members voted unanimously for the proposals.

Weather-damaged

Committee chairman Leslie McDonnell said: "Parkview now have all the consents they need to get on with the job of restoring this famous building.

"They have told us they will be ready to start work in earnest in the new year - we expect them to keep to this."

Battersea Power Station stopped generating electricity in 1983.

Since then, it has fallen into disrepair and, without a roof, it has been damaged by the weather.

Plans to redevelop the site in the 1980s were hampered by rising costs while economic recession halted work further.

Current owners Parkview finally obtained the site in 1996.

The full works include a new permanent roof, new floors, a rebuilt west wall, installation of mechanical, electrical and plumbing services and new concrete chimneys.

The plans are part of a broader £500m scheme to regenerate the entire 38-acre site which were approved by Wandsworth Council in August 2000.
