'Junk food' row over 2012 Games

The London Green Party says the move goes against previous promises to make food at the 2012 Olympics local, seasonal and organic.

The International Organising Committee of the games arranges official sponsorship for the event.

London organisers were questioned at a London Assembly meeting about the move.

Food stranglehold

Jenny Jones from the London Green Party said: "While I appreciate that the London organizers are bound by the IOC's sponsorship deal, I really do feel this is a big let down."

"The games are a showcase. People attending should be inspired to lead healthier lives, not sit there shovelling down junk-food."

But Paul Deighton, chief executive of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games, assured critics at the meeting that the fast food giant would not have a stranglehold on food supply during the event.

"Their agreement allows them to be suppliers of their particular food area so we won't see alternative burger suppliers."

"But they don't have control over all our food supply."
