Hundreds of homes without gas since a water main burst on Tuesday, leaking liquid into the energy supply pipes, could soon be reconnected.
A Transco spokeswoman said supply to some homes in Harold Hill, east London, was restored on Wednesday night with the rest being looked at on Thursday.
Those left without gas were given electric heaters and cooking rings.
Elderly people and those with young children were concerned about the effects of the sub-zero temperatures.
A drop-in advice centre was opened at the leisure centre on Gooshays Drive on Wednesday to hand out the free electric appliances Transco provided.
Resources drafted in
The Transco spokeswoman said: "Things are progressing quite well.
"We started to restore the gas supply last night and we are hoping to get the majority of people back on today unless we come across any major engineering difficulties."
She said extra engineers had been drafted in from East Anglia, and the Midlands to deal with the situation.
A spokesman for Havering Council said it was providing support and community welfare.
