Respect win council by-election

Labour has lost a council by-election to the anti-war Respect coalition in London's East End.

Respect won its first election when its candidate Oliyur Rahman took the St Dunstans and Stepney Green ward in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

Respect, which brings together a range of campaigners, was formed in January by former Labour MP George Galloway.

The coalition also polled a majority of votes cast in the borough in the European Parliament poll on 10 June.

Respect's full name is Respect Equality Socialism Peace Environment Community Trade Unionism.
