Pavilion for murdered schoolboy

A Lincolnshire teenager murdered in a school knife attack has had a sports pavilion opened in his memory.

Luke Walmsley, 14, was stabbed through the heart at Birkbeck School, North Somercotes, in 2003.

His family and friends helped raise £140,000 for the building on playing fields in the town.

Luke's father, Paul, said the pavilion was a fitting tribute to his sporting son and he hoped it would become a centre for the community.

Mr Walmsley said the foundation they set up in Luke's memory had been a labour of love.

"It is quite emotional really. To think back in 2003 after Luke was murdered it was when we decided to set up the Luke Walmsley Sports Foundation, this was the ultimate vision.

"But I didn't realise it would take so long and be such hard work - it has been an emotional journey."

Fellow pupil Alan Pennell was detained for life for the murder in 2004 and ordered to serve at least 12 years behind bars.
