Firework explosion 'shook houses'

A suspected firework explosion which sent fragments of a bin flying into gardens in Lincolnshire could have been lethal, police have said.

Residents of Riby Close, Gainsborough, reported the blast on Saturday afternoon had shaken their houses.

Officers found splinters from the concrete bin had landed in gardens 30ft (9.1m) away.

Children had been reported playing with fireworks but police said the size of the explosion was a serious concern.

PCSO Penny Smith said: "Our main concern is that young people have been using fireworks to create a big explosion which residents describe as shaking their houses.

"Anyone who had been in the vicinity of the bin when it exploded would have been seriously injured and someone could have been killed.

"Parents who know that their children have access to fireworks should consider the dangers of this incident and ensure that young people do not have fireworks unsupervised."
