Dozens of firms have expressed an interest in redeveloping the only remaining cattle market in Lincolnshire, officials have said.
East Lindsey District Council is considering plans to sell the land and has confirmed more than 70 firms and individuals have contacted them.
A new report said the market does help the Louth economy but a new use for the site would also have benefits.
The council has insisted it is still looking at all the options.
Cash benefit
The independent report found about 75 farmers regularly used the market, and about half of them said they would be badly affected if it closed.
Council spokesman Jon Burgess said it was still considering the best way forward.
"The report identifies that the market itself is not a profitable venue - it is very reliant on the district council subsidising its continued use.
"What we then have to consider from the other side of that is, as an asset of the district council, is that the most effective use of that site?
"Or is there another way in which we can use the site that will bring additional benefit to the town of Louth?"
