Fire crews tackle seafront blaze

Scene of the fire

Dozens of firefighters are tackling a fire at a seafront pub in Lincolnshire.

The cellar and office of the Square Peg pub on Grand Parade in Skegness are on fire not far from the location of a fire that hit the seafront in 2007.

The blaze broke out on the roof at the rear of the building, the fire service said. Some flats on Edinburgh Avenue were evacuated as a precaution.

The Grand Parade was closed off from the clock tower to Scarborough Avenue and Edinburgh Avenue was also closed.

Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue said between 60 and 70 fire service personnel and seven officers with at least eight appliances and an aerial platform were being used to fight the fire.

"It's been absolutely devastating once again for Skegness"
Neil Pimperton, Mayor of Skegness

Extra appliances were being brought in to bring water and crews at the scene had asked for a second hydraulic platform so they could tackle the fire from above, the fire service said.

An ambulance spokeswoman said they had one response vehicle at the scene on stand-by.

The Mayor of Skegness, Neil Pimperton, was attending a function nearby when he heard the news.

He said: "As a retired fire officer, I know what these lads are going through. It's been absolutely devastating once again for Skegness, but hopefully, when the smoke is cleared then we'll be able to see the extent of the damage."
