Recycling is doubled in two years

A Lincolnshire district is claiming to be one of the top three recyclers in the UK.

Recycling has doubled and composting tripled in East Lindsey in the two years since a three-bin system was started by the district council.

And the amount of landfill waste has been reduced by 30%, the council said.

The official figures have not yet been released, but a district council spokesperson said the figures put East Lindsey in the top three.

In June 2006 residents were given three new wheelie bins for green waste, recyclables and other rubbish.

Deputy leader of the district council Dick Edgington said: "It is a major step to go from a bag system to three bins in one go... We felt it was needed.

"The parish councils were receptive and so was the public. It has been a success."

In 2005-06, nearly 5,500 tonnes of waste was recycled. The figure went up to more than 12,000 tonnes in 2007-08.

The compost waste went up from about 6,400 tonnes to almost 18,500 tonnes in the same period.

And landfill rubbish fell from more than 31,300 tonnes to just over 22,000 tonnes.
