More delays for town supermarket

Proposals for a new supermarket in a Leicestershire town have once again been put on hold.

Applications from Asda and Tesco to build a store in Coalville were due to be discussed at a planning meeting on 21 July.

But North West Leicestershire District Council said more time was needed to assess the impact of the proposals on the town's road system.

A planning meeting due to have taken place in April was also postponed.

Tesco has applied to build a store at the crossroads between Whitwick Road and Hotel Street.

Delay 'disappointing'

Asda wants to build a supermarket on a former factory site in Market Street near Memorial Square.

Both companies said they were disappointed by the delay.

Councillor Matthew Blain said: "We all want a supermarket in Coalville and I know many people have a view on the retailer they would like.

"But our job is to choose the site that is best for the future viability of all the shops in Coalville - that is why it is vital to get all the issues sorted before the planning committee.

"What the committee has to consider is which development offers the best option for the town centre in the long-term, is deliverable and will not result in problems with traffic problems in the town centre.

"It cannot do this without all the evidence and information available."
