Plans for a £100m joint development between the Leicester Tigers, the city's hospitals and university have been submitted to the city council.

Work has already begun on a new stand at the Welford Road ground but these latest plans include a four-star hotel.

The plans are for the former Granby Hall and Fosse Day Centre sites.

The University is planning a new halls of residence on the site and the hospital will use it for offices and other facilities.

Work on the new Caterpillar stand should be complete by August.

Leicester Tigers' chairman Peter Tom said: "We have worked closely with the UHL and the university to ensure their respective needs are satisfied and we are in detailed discussions with several quality hotel operators who see this as an ideal opportunity to move into Leicester."

A spokesperson from the University of Leicester added: "Investment in accommodation and facilities for the University of Leicester's growing body of students is key to the future success of the university."

The proposed development is located next to the Welford Road stadium, which will have a capacity of 24,000 when the new stand is completed.
