City honours the dead of Mumbai

Candles to honour the people killed in the Mumbai attacks

Representatives of the major faith groups in Leicester gathered on Saturday to honour those killed in the attacks in Mumbai.

They lit candles in an event organised by the local business community.

The lord mayor of Leicester joined other community leaders to mark the solidarity of the city's different faith communities in mourning.

Books of condolence signed in the city will be be presented to the Indian high commissioner early next week.

'Solidarity of Leicester'

The Light a Candle event was held at Leicester's Exhibition Centre.

Lord Mayor of Leicester Manjula Sood said: "It is very important for all the faith groups to come together at this precise moment because it shows the solidarity of Leicester."

Suleman Nagdi of the Leicester-based Federation of Muslim Organisations added: "We feel that acts of terrorism have no faith whatsoever and we have to be absolutely sure that we do not align it to any particular faith community."

Reshum Singh Sandhu of the Sikh Welfare and Cultural Society said: "We have to bring the message all together that (the terrorist attacks are) are no fault of any community here."

Leicester has one of the UK's largest Indian communities and strong links with the country.
