More than two tonnes of wire cable have been seized from scrap yards in Leicester in police raids.
The stolen cabling has an estimated value of "thousands of pounds", a police spokesman said.
Leicestershire Police said a man had been arrested and is being questioned about the stolen wire.
The raids were part of Operation Ebony which is a joint campaign involving police, the Environment Agency and Trading Standards.
Det Ch Insp Andy Lee of Leicestershire police said: "The theft of metal has gone on long enough.
"Theft from church roofs, vehicles or businesses has a massive effect on the community and we want to put a stop to it."
