Clean-up after water main burst

Clean-up work is continuing in Leicester city centre after a water main burst over the weekend.

The 10in (25cm) water main on London Road burst early on Sunday morning, flooding the basement of the Regency Hotel and several other properties.

Manager Ellen Thompson said the fire service helped pump out the hotel's flooded basement.

Severn Trent has repaired the water main but temporary traffic lights are still in place.

Mrs Thompson said: "The water was pouring into the car park and has gone down in the cellar.

"We haven't had a chance to assess the damage completely but there is obviously quite a lot down there."

"The mains repair is complete but the road surface still needs to be replaced," Severn Trent spokesman Andrew Marsh said.

A slip road from Knighton Road to London Road is also closed and the temporary lights are expected to remain in place until Wednesday.

About 15 properties lost their water supply while the pipe was being repaired, but have since been reconnected, Mr Marsh said.
