One dead in accident on motorway

One person has died and two people were injured, one critically, in an accident on the M1 southbound.

The air ambulance was called out to the carriageway close to junction 24, near Kegworth in Leicestershire, at about 1700 BST on Wednesday.

It is understood a single vehicle left the carriageway and hit a tree.

The motorway was closed at junction 25 southbound to allow police to recover the vehicle, causing long rush hour tailbacks. It has since reopened.
