Nursing home killer gets 24 years

Nathan Mann

A man who admitted murdering two women in a Leicester nursing home has been sentenced to life in prison and told he will serve a minimum of over 24 years.

Nathan Mann, 20, of Avonside Drive, Crown Hills, Leicester, killed the women during a burglary at the Hayes Park Nursing Home last November.

Nottingham Crown Court heard the bodies of Rashmi Badiani, 56, and Radhaben Chauhan, 72, were found in their room.

Mrs Badiani had suffered head injuries and Mrs Chauhan was smothered.

The court heard that the women were in twin beds and shared room three at the home.

Both had been stroke victims and had health problems that needed round the clock care. Mrs Chauhan could only move her left hand.

'Frenzied attack'

CCTV of the incident showed Mann got in via an unsecured window and left only nine minutes later.

He was arrested just days after the deaths. It was later revealed he was on bail over assault charges at the time of the murders.

Mann's defence said he was "ashamed and appalled" at what he had done.

He had entered the home with the intention of stealing alcohol and had panicked when the women had woken up to find him in the room.

The prosecution had alleged there was sexual conduct in both of the killings, which was denied by Mann.

Passing sentence Mr Justice McCombe said Mann had carried out a "frenzied attack on two victims who could hardly have been more vulnerable".

Det Insp Mark Harrison from Leicestershire Police said: "He could have made good his escape from the premises even if the two ladies had woken up as he decsribed... he didn't need to attack them both."
