Crash victim's car was impounded

Dave Curnock

Six people, killed in a head-on crash in Leicestershire, were on their way back from the Lincolnshire coast after one of their cars was impounded.

Richard Bolton had gone with a friend to collect four of the group who had asked for a lift from Sutton-on-Sea.

Police said victim Christopher Worrad, 18, was not insured to drive the vehicle which was taken to a compound.

But Dave Curnock, father of one of the victims, said he was angry the group had been left stranded.

Mr Curnock, who lost his daughter Emily Curnock, 18, of Enderby, in the crash, said:

"If [the police] had got in touch with us and said 'your kids are at the roadside come and pick them up, we're concerned for their safety', I'd have gone down there like a shot.

"I'd had a phone call off Emily saying it's all right Dad, we can sort it out but that's the last I heard from her.

The Mondeo on a lorry

"The last thing she said to me was 'I want to come home' and unfortunately she's coming home in a body bag. It's a silly waste of life."

The Mondeo was travelling towards Leicester and was about a mile from Melton Mowbray town centre when the crash happened at 0157 BST on Thursday.

Driver Richard Bolton, 23, of Beaumont Leys, died along with Christopher Worrad and Teela Chamberlain, 19, from Leicester's Saffron Lane estate.

Luke Whittle, 19, of Enderby and Carly Ann Arrindell, 18, of Glen Parva, also died.

Relatives have spoken of their shock and devastation at the tragedy.

Police have described the accident as one of the worst they have ever seen.

Crash investigators are continuing to look at the circumstances around the accident.
