Man trapped in collapse at school

The former Gartree High School A construction worker has been taken to hospital after part of a former school in Leicestershire collapsed.

Emergency services were called to the old Gartree High School site in Oadby, near Leicester, just before 1400 GMT.

Fire and rescue crews used airbags to try to lift the concrete slab off the trapped builder.

It is unclear if the male worker, who is thought to have been part of a demolition team, was seriously hurt. He was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Demolition of old school buildings, dating from the 1960s, is part of a major redevelopment of the site.

Pupil safety

Eyewitnesses said that since many of the buildings were being knocked down it was difficult to judge the scale of the collapse.

The local education authority stressed that no child was put at risk by the collapse, which happened during school time.

A county council spokeswoman said: "It's an old school that's being demolished in a secure site.

"The incident happened in the site. It's being investigated. There were no safety worries for the pupils whatsoever."

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has visited the site.
