Cab clampdown is hailed a success

A late-night clampdown on taxis found five that were unroadworthy, according to council officers.

The taxis, being used in Coalville and Ashby town centres, were immediately taken out of service.

North West Leicestershire District Council licensing enforcement officers found defects including worn tyres and an oil leak.

A total of 12 cabs were examined. The authority said it would be regularly holding similar exercises.

Council officers were accompanied by police and staff from the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency.

Sgt Pam Gerrard from Leicestershire Police said: "We know that at the end of a night out people are tired and keen to get home quickly.

"But we would urge people not to travel in a vehicle if they are in any way concerned about its roadworthiness.

"It is concerning that so many taxis failed and that some of the faults were so significant the vehicles were immediately taken out of service."
