Art surrounds fire-damaged site

Artwork is being used to decorate the site of a historic building in Blackpool which was destroyed by fire.

The former Yates building at Talbot Square is to be surrounded by a colourful art feature on hoardings surrounding the now empty space.

Local artist Sarah Galloway has designed the images, which show people and places associated with the resort.

The fire in February destroyed the 141-year-old Yates building. A 21-year-old man is charged with aggravated arson.

The artwork also includes words by poet John Siddique.

"Inspired by the vibrant and colourful sites and sounds of Blackpool, I wanted to create an artwork that reflects the best of the resort," Ms Galloway said.

"It has been a privilege to create a major artwork for such a prominent and well loved space in the town."

The building was demolished after it was deemed structurally unsafe.

Councillor Maxine Callow, of Blackpool Council, said: "The council is hopeful that Blackpool will see an iconic building rising out of the ashes and will be working with the owners to assist in anyway we can.

"However, it is likely that the work to rebuild on the site will take some time and in the interim we don't want the area to look shabby.

"The new artwork will provide a vibrant feature whilst the future of the site is decided."
