Victorian time capsules unveiled

Two time capsules unearthed on the site of a Victorian school in Lancashire are to be opened more than 100 years after being buried.

Builders found the capsules last month during the demolition of Ragged School on Bent Street in Blackburn.

One was discovered under the school's foundation stone laid in 1897. The second dates back to 1907.

Archaeologists are in talks with Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council about how to preserve the contents.

Cllr David Foster, executive member for social services, said: "These are exciting discoveries.

"We had no idea either of the time capsules was there.

"The first discovery was a great find, but to then dig up another is fantastic."

Builders were clearing the site for a new extra care housing scheme which was last used as Ardley Day Centre and the United Reform Church.

After an archaeologist's report, the council decided to preserve part of the building, including war memorials, which will be restored along with the Ragged School foundation stone.
