Operation to stop match trouble

Extra police officers will be on duty for the Carling Cup semi final second leg between Burnley and Tottenham.

Lancashire Police said it was aiming to keep fans safe at the match at Turf Moor next Wednesday.

Police said known trouble-makers have been approached and licensees have been reminded of their responsibilities to help prevent disorder.

Insp Jes Holland of Lancashire police said: "Disorderly or anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated."

Extra journey time

Tottenham beat Burnley 4-1 in the first leg last week, coming from behind after the Championship team had led 1-0 at half time.

"Despite the first leg defeat, the spirit of the Clarets' fans won't have been dampened and we are expecting it to be a very busy evening," Insp Holland said.

"With that in mind, there will be a large policing operation in place with extra officers on duty to make sure people get to and from the match without incident.

"At this time there is nothing to suggest there will be any problems - there certainly haven't been so far and we know that the vast majority of fans are law abiding and just want to enjoy the match."

Heavy traffic around Turf Moor is expected and fans are urged to leave extra time for journeys.
