Driver dies in head-on car crash

A 24-year-old man has died in a head-on car crash in Lancashire.

Mark Appleby, of Ash Street, Blackpool, died when his Renault Megane collided with a BMW X5 on Weeton Road in Singleton at about 2200 GMT on Sunday.

A man and a woman who were also in the Megane suffered minor injuries and were able to escape the vehicle before it caught fire.

Lancashire Police said they were "walking wounded" and were taken to hospital for treatment.

Police are investigating and have appealed for witnesses to contact them.

A spokesman said the white P-registered Megane was travelling towards Weeton when it collided with the 53-plate silver BMW X5 travelling towards Singleton village.

Sgt Peter Beresford, from Blackpool Police, said: "We are appealing for anyone who may have seen the collision or observed these vehicles prior to the collision, to contact us as soon as possible."
