Preliminary work has started on a revamp of a Grade II-listed railway station in Lancashire.
The modernisation of Ormskirk station will include enhanced CCTV coverage, improved cycle storage and refurbishment of the platform canopy.
A temporary ticket office will be set up immediately, with the main construction work starting in January.
The £1.5m project is part of the government's National Stations Improvement Programme scheme.
The station at Ormskirk is receiving £635,000 of Department for Transport funding towards the work.
Matthew Tomlinson, from Lancashire County Council which is leading the project, said: "The project combines the sympathetic restoration of the external features of the building with a modern, clean interior.
"The design team has worked hard to use the most environmentally sustainable approaches especially in energy and water usage. When completed Ormskirk will have a railway station it can be proud of."
The preliminary works also include a contamination survey of the subsoil and an asbestos survey of the building.
Lancashire County Council will be working in partnership with the West of Lancashire Community Rail Partnership, Merseyrail, Network Rail, Merseytravel, the Railway Heritage Trust, West Lancashire District Council, North West Development Agency and the Department for Transport.
