Threatened pool plans take place

Pool protest

The future of Kirkham swimming pool in Lancashire looks set to be secured if plans drawn up between councillors and the YMCA are agreed.

Fylde Council was criticised in March when it announced plans to close both Kirkham and St Annes pools to save money.

Local group Rural Splash campaigned against the closure of both pools.

If plans are approved by both the council and the YMCA, the Kirkham baths will remain open beyond March 2009.

A council spokesman said Kirkham was in a good position to be saved as there was a charitable group already in position to work with the YMCA in the running of the pool.

If the scheme is a success the council would then look to continue talks with other groups to takeover the running of swimming facilities in the St Annes area.

Councillors were due to meet on Thursday evening to discuss the plans.
