Police safety spot check for HGVs

Lorry drivers have been warned to make sure their vehicles are not breaking the law after a recent crackdown.

Cleveland Police officers recently stopped 61 work vehicles on the A66 on Teesside as part of Operation Mermaid.

Just under half of the drivers stopped were cautioned for offences including having no licence or insurance and having mechanical defects.

They also found a number of drivers were driving for longer periods of time than permitted by their licence.
