Thousands set to visit city Mela

The annual Mela festival to celebrate South Asian culture has got under way in Preston.

Thousands of revellers are expected to visit the event at Avenham and Miller Parks between noon and 2100 BST.

As well as live entertainment, there will also be food stalls selling South Asian delicacies and demonstrations of traditional crafts like Henna painting.

The event, which celebrates its 11th anniversary, is organised by Preston Mela Trust and Preston City Council.

The mayor of Preston, councillor John Swindells, said: "Preston Mela is a is a celebration of the city's diverse and vibrant culture and recognises the contribution the South Asian community makes to the city.

"It is a superb event attracting thousands of people as there will be something for all the family - from superb food and colourful dancing displays, to live music and workshops."
