Legionnaires' outbreak discussed

Kepak Group Health officials investigating an outbreak of Legionnaires' Disease at a meat-boning factory in Lancashire are meeting to discuss the issue.

Two workers at the Kepac Group in Walton Summit, Bamber Bridge, Preston, contracted the disease last week.

Tests are continuing to find the source of the disease.

The Health Protection Agency, the Health and Safety Executive, South Ribble Borough Council and Central Lancashire PCT are investigating.

One of the workers has made a good recovery but the other is still poorly.

Legionnaires' disease is a form of pneumonia that older people and people with other underlying health conditions can be particularly vulnerable to.

Species of legionella are now known to be natural inhabitants of water and can be detected in rivers, lakes and streams.

The factory's water system is being examined as it is thought it could be a potential source of the disease.
