Casino gaming boss visits resort

Blackpool's Golden Mile A representative of one of the world's largest gaming companies is visiting Blackpool on Friday for talks about developing a super casino.

Harrah's Entertainment Inc, which runs the Caesar's Palace casinos, is one of 20 firms interested in creating a Las Vegas-style attraction at the resort.

Blackpool Council is one of 27 local authorities bidding to build the UK's only large regional casino.

The Casino Advisory Panel is to make its recommendation in December 2006.

Councillors say more than 20,000 jobs and £2bn of investment would pour into the region if its bid is successful.

Blackpool is seen as the frontrunner in the battle to win the super casino licence.

Economic development

Harrah's is interested in developing the casino and has identified Blackpool as a potential development project as it looks to move into the European market.

Andrew Tottenham, the company's managing director of European development, will visit the gaming academy at Blackpool and Fylde College during his visit.

He will also meet with councillors to reaffirm the firm's support for their casino bid and its intention to develop in the town.

Mr Tottenham said his company was extremely excited at the prospect of Blackpool securing the regional casino franchise.

He said it does, it would be a positive step forward for economic development and employment opportunities.
