Fresh appeal over bailed rapist

Andrew Alderman

The mother of a rape victim has made an appeal for help to find her daughter's attacker two years after he fled the country while on bail.

Police believe Andrew Alderman, 49, from Maidstone, Kent, who disappeared in August 2006, may be living in Spain, Ibiza, Majorca or the Canary Islands.

He was sentenced in his absence to 10 years for rape, indecent assault and sexual activity with a child.

The mother said while Alderman was at liberty her daughter was suffering.

She added: "How dare he not even be in court to accept his punishment.

"We had to go though the motions of standing in court, not so much me but my daughter, of being cross examined, having to talk about everything personal, really painful things and he can't even accept that and ran away from it."

The mother, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said: "It's very, very hard to try to move on with our lives because that chapter of our lives hasn't ended.

"We have been working closely with Interpol and a European arrest warrant has been issued"
Det Insp Caroline Nyman

"It's just continued because he still hasn't been punished, he's still out there living his life, swanning around, doing what he is doing. It's unfair.

"I want to appeal to any holidaymakers going to the continent this summer to remember the photo and if they see him to contact police," she said.

Alderman was last seen on CCTV at the Channel Tunnel terminal in Folkestone, Kent, in the early hours of 31 August 2006.

He is known to speak several languages, including Spanish.

Det Insp Caroline Nyman said: "We have been working closely with Interpol and a European arrest warrant has been issued.

"In addition, we have been working with the banks to monitor any financial activity that may lead us to his whereabouts."

She added: "However, there have so far been no leads or sightings which is why we are appealing to anyone who may recognise the picture of Mr Alderman to get in touch."
