Storms disrupt water ski contest

Poor weather conditions in Kent have caused the first day of racing at the European Water Ski Racing Championships to be called off.

Strong winds and rough seas led to changes to the planned events at Ramsgate's Royal Harbour Marina.

The contest's jury decided conditions were too dangerous for racing.

More than 90 competitors from across Europe were due take part in four races on Sunday. Entertainment for spectators went ahead as planned.

Tony Williams, chairman of racing for British Water Ski Federation and GB team captain, said: "It's obviously very disappointing for everyone - both the competitors, who were very keen to get out on the water and start racing and the spectators, but safety has to be our first consideration."

Racing is scheduled to begin on Tuesday and will finish on Saturday 12 July.

The championships were officially opened on Saturday by the chairman of the British Olympic Committee, Lord Colin Moynihan.

Competitors and their boats paraded down to the harbour, watched by hundreds of people.
