Officers tour eco-camp peninsula

Last year's eco-camp at Heathrow

Officers are to tour the Hoo peninsula in Kent to keep residents updated about policing arrangements during a planned Camp for Climate Action protest.

Neighbourhood officers and a mobile police station will spend five days at various locations, starting on Monday.

Organisers of the Climate Camp event in August have said they want to force Kingsnorth power station to shut down.

The Camp for Climate Action is to be held at E.ON's Kingsnorth site from 3 to 12 August.

The protesters also plan to launch a flotilla of craft on the River Medway.

'Minimum disruption'

The first Camp for Climate Action, held at Heathrow Airport in August 2007, was attended by more than 1,000 protesters.

It required up to 1,800 police on busy days, with policing costs of more than £7m, according to Scotland Yard.

Kent Police has said it will work with police forces from around the country to manage this year's event.

Police manning the mobile police station will be explaining how they plan to work with Medway Council and other organisations to keep disruption to a minimum for residents and businesses.

A special hotline and email address have also been set up for anyone with concerns or queries specifically about the camp.

And police are asking anyone who sees anything suspicious that could be related to the climate camp to contact police.

The mobile police station will be at Church Lane car park, Hoo on Monday, Tuesday and Friday morning; Stoke Community School in Allhallows Road on Wednesday; outside Chapel Road fire station, Grain on Thursday and at High Halstow recreation hall car park, The Street on Friday afternoon.
