Public to meet over protest camp

The proposed new Kingsnorth power station

Two public meetings will be held to discuss a climate change protest camp planned for a Kent town.

The Camp for Climate Action is to be held at E.ON's Kingsnorth site in Kent, from 3 to 12 August, to protest over a proposed coal power station.

Police have organised the meetings along with Medway Council to inform locals about policing at the event.

The first Camp for Climate Action, held at Heathrow Airport in August 2007, was attended by more than 1,000 protesters.

It required up to 1,800 police on busy days, with policing costs of more than £7m, according to Scotland Yard.

Kent Police has said it will work with police forces from around the country to manage this year's event.

In a statement it said: "We will provide policing to enable lawful protest, but will act when necessary to enforce the law."

The first public meeting will be held at BAE Sports and Social Club in Hoo on 10 June, while the second will be at Grain Village Hall, Grain, on 12 June.
