Artist spends second day in sand

Mark McGowan buried on Margate beach

A performance artist planning to stay buried in the sand on a Kent beach for the best part of 48 hours has said his stunt is going well.

Mark McGowan has been buried up to his neck on Margate beach since midday on Saturday, with the exception of occasional short breaks.

He is campaigning to save the British seaside holiday and wants to stay in the sand until midday on Monday.

"I'm feeling really tired... I'll just do it hour by hour," Mr McGowan said.

He added that during his stint overnight he had managed to sleep for six hours despite "freezing" conditions.

But, he said: "I'm allowed to take breaks - I'm not David Blaine."

His initiative is part of the Margate Rocks art and environment festival.
