Coastline flood risk 'to triple'

St Margaret's Bay, Dover The number of homes affected by coastal flooding in Kent is expected to triple in the next ten years.

The Environment Agency said 2,000 properties between Kingsdown and Pegwell Bay were at risk from flooding.

And it says this figure could rise to 6,000 by 2017 because of climate change and rising sea levels.

Residents living along the east Kent coastline are being invited to take part in a public consultation on the future of flood risk in the area.

The results will be used to develop a strategy for managing coastal flooding and erosion between Pegwell Bay and Kingsdown.

"If we do nothing, flood risk along the east Kent coastline is only going to get worse"
Clive Older

The strategy will also look at tidal flooding from the River Stour in the Sandwich Area

The Environment Agency is running the consultation in conjunction with Dover District Council.

Clive Older, of the Environment Agency in Kent, said: "If we do nothing, flood risk along the east Kent coastline is only going to get worse.

"By looking at flood risk and erosion now, we can put a plan in place to manage the risk and protect more homes for more years."

He added: "The coastline is going to come under increasing pressure over the coming years and decades, from sea level rise and increased storms due to climate change. We need to plan now for changes in the future.

"It is important that local people take part in the consultation. This is their chance to have their say."

Exhibitions will be held at Sandwich Guildhall on 10 September and at Deal Town Hall on 11 September at Deal Town Hall.
