Tourist plea over bailed rapist

Andrew Alderman The mother of a teenage rape victim has appealed for holidaymakers in Spain to help track down her daughter's attacker a year after he fled the UK.

Andrew Alderman, 48, from Maidstone, Kent, was on bail and disappeared on 31 August 2006.

He was sentenced in his absence to 10 years for rape, indecent assault and sexual activity with a child.

Police believe Alderman may now be living in southern Spain, Ibiza, Majorca or the Canary Islands.

The mother of Alderman's victim said: "It's a living nightmare. It's constant, every single day it's there. It's not finalised, he's been convicted but he's not been punished.

"Holidaymakers could quite easily bump into him... if somebody does see him just phone the police and tell them where they have seen him."

'Fresh start'

She said bringing him to justice was paramount for her family's well-being.

She added: "We can [then] start to move on with our lives and make a fresh start, and start being happy again."

Alderman was last seen on CCTV at the Channel Tunnel terminal in Folkestone, Kent, in the early hours of 31 August 2006.

He is known to speak several languages, including Spanish.

Det Insp David Berry, from Kent Police, asked people on holiday in Spain to look out for a specific car.

"We are particularly interested in a Volkswagen Passat we do know Andrew Alderman owned and left the country with in August last year. The registration is GL53 VBU.

"From information we have we do believe he is somewhere in the south of Spain."
