MP calls for bridge toll decision

An MP is calling on the government to make an immediate decision on the level of tolls on the Humber Bridge.

The Department for Transport (DfT) is considering a report which proposes increasing the charges by 20p to £2.90.

It was submitted after a public inquiry into the tolls in March. Cleethorpes MP Shona McIsaac said the DfT was taking too long over the issue.

Campaigners have called for the tolls to be scrapped. A year-long trial of a reduced charge of £1 is also proposed.

Ms McIsaac said: "What we want is a year-long trial of reduced tolls to see if that increases usage over the Humber Bridge.

"A £1 charge would save everybody money crossing the bridge, but we can't move forward on that suggestion until ministers come out with their decision on the inquiry."

A DfT spokeswoman said: "We are carefully considering all aspects of the inspector's report following the public inquiry, and a decision will be made as soon as possible."
