Convicted sex offender on the run

Joseph Chapman

A man who has been convicted of sex offences against children is on the run from police.

Joseph Chapman, 64, also known as Thomas Courtie, failed to appear for trial at Hull Crown Court on Monday.

On Tuesday a judge started the trial in his absence. He was found guilty of 12 sex offences against children on Friday and sentenced to 16 years in prison.

Chapman is thought to have left his home address on Pollard Court, Beverley Road, Hull, at 0820 BST on Monday.

He was found guilty of seven counts of indecent assault against a girl under the age of 14, two counts of gross indecency with a girl under the age of 16 and three counts of rape of a female under 16.

Liverpool accent

Det Con Adrian Adamson, of Humberside Police's public protection unit, said: "Mr Chapman offended against children over a substantial period. This man groomed and threatened his victims.

"Mr Chapman did not face up to his victims in court and his current whereabouts are unknown. He left his home address just hours before the trial began and is currently wanted by police."

Chapman is described as white, 5ft 7ins tall, stocky and bald, with green eyes.

Humberside Police said he speaks with a Liverpool accent and may have a grey or white beard.

Mr Adamson urged anyone with information about Chapman's whereabouts to contact police or Crimestoppers.

He said he believed Chapman did not pose any threat to the public, but he should not be challenged.
