Sharp drop in crime at Hull Fair

Recorded crime at this year's Hull Fair plummeted 35% compared with last year's event, Humberside Police figures show.

The number of crimes and incidents of disorder during the week-long event, which is attended by 750,000 people, fell from 72 in 2007 to 47 this year.

Police hailed "particularly dramatic reductions in the number of thefts, common assault and vehicle crime".

The fall in crime was attributed to a zero-tolerance policy on alcohol and a police operation focusing on car crime.

Uniformed police officers carried out high-visibility patrols, supported by special constables and PCSOs, and worked closely with Hull City Council's park ranger staff and professional stewards.

'Firm but fair'

Insp Karen De Braal, of Humberside Police, said: "This year's Hull Fair was a huge success and we have received some very positive feedback from members of the public and those working at the fair.

"We policed Hull Fair in a firm but fair manner and did not tolerate criminal or disorderly behaviour.

"This led to large numbers of families attending which in turn created a fantastic atmosphere.

"Hull Fair attracts hundreds of thousands of people looking for entertainment and fun and I am very pleased that our hard work has seen some positive impact on crime levels during that period."
