Women and dogs rescued from cliff

Two women were found clinging to a cliff after they became stranded in water on an East Yorkshire beach.

The RAF search and rescue helicopter and coastguards were called when the women and their two dogs got trapped by the tide near Hornsea on Friday.

Fisherman Tony Jakes helped the pair into his fishing boat from their refuge point on the cliff face.

He said such situations could be avoided if people checked tidal timetables before they set out.

Mr Jakes said: "We just jumped out and got the two ladies and dogs and put them in the boat and took them safely back to Hornsea.

"They were climbing up the cliffs but couldn't go any further and the tide was advancing. It would have continued like that for another hour at least."

The women had been out walking their dogs when the incident happened. No-one was injured.

"This issue really should be addressed, there are timetables available by the boat house near the car park," added Mr Jakes.
