Academy 'will bring improvements'

Worcester's first academy school will bring immediate improvements for students, the project manager has said.

Elgar Technology College, which has been in special measures since 2007, is set to close and re-open as the Tudor Grange Academy Worcester in September.

Bob O'Hagan, the project manager responsible for gaining academy status, said: "I think you will see some key changes right from September."

The school will have a new uniform and new curriculum and subjects.

The decision to replace the school with a city academy was made by the county council's cabinet following a public consultation.

Council leaders said the consultation followed an Ofsted report in February 2007 which placed the school in special measures and "the school remaining in that category despite extensive efforts to bring about improvements".

Mr O'Hagan said: "I'm convinced that you will start to see some differences immediately.

"I project managed another academy that opened last September and frankly it was transformed."
