Man jailed after fake ID attempt

A British student arrested in the US for attempting to use fake ID to buy a gun has been jailed for 10 months, it has been revealed.

Stephen Jackley, 22, of Sidmouth, east Devon, admitted trying to buy the weapon from a store in Vermont in May.

Vermont State Police said the University of Worcester student had tried to buy the weapon as a dare.

After his arrest Jackley's room at the University was searched and a suspicious package was found.

There was an evacuation for more than five hours and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit was called in.

Jackley was sentenced on 29 October by a US district court in Rutland, Vermont.

Detectives in the UK are eager to interview him in connection with a number of armed robberies in Worcester, and an attempted bank robbery in Herefordshire.

He is also wanted by police in Devon and the Netherlands in connection with similar investigations, West Mercia Constabulary said.

The force is in talks over the possible extradition of Jackley once he has served his sentence in the US.
