More than 100 fridges fly-tipped

Householders should be on their guard against "unscrupulous scrap collectors" after more than 100 fridges were dumped, a council says.

Worcester City Council said the old fridges had been dumped across the city during the last six months.

The council believes there has been an increase in unregulated scrap collectors who are fly-tipping fridges after removing high-value metal.

The council said people who do not use authorised collectors could be fined.

John Bond, the council's environmental protection officer, said: "It is up to householders to check whether contractors they hire to remove any waste from their property, are registered waste carriers.

"If you hire contractors to remove waste from your property, you should ask them for their waste carrier number."
