Two counties hit by heavy storms

Flash floods in Worcester - photo by Revd R Charles Heavy storms have caused chaos across Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

About 300 homes were without power on Monday in Hereford and Peterchurch after power lines were brought down.

Motorists were delayed after roads were closed due to standing water and the main road between Worcester and Hereford was only passable with care.

Flood barriers went up in Bewdley along the banks of the River Severn on Monday evening as a precaution, the Environment Agency said.

Bosbury School in Herefordshire was closed on Monday following flooding nearby.

Power firm Central Networks said the heavy rain had caused weighed-down branches to fall from trees, snapping power lines across the two counties.

Police advised motorists to be extra cautious in the current poor weather conditions.

Flood warnings were in place on the River SeIsbourne in Worcestershire.

In the north of Hereford, a tree came down across the A49 near Dinmore Hill.

Many roads around Leominster were also impassable while in Hereford the Belmont roundabout was under water and the subway at Eign Gate flooded.

People were advised to check with the Environment Agency about flood warnings and watches in force, and with the Highways Agency for further information on traffic disruption.
