Plans to build a new super-port on the Hampshire coast have been boosted in a new report by MPs that highlights a national need for greater port space.
Associated British Ports (ABP) wants to build a £600m container terminal at Dibden Bay in Southampton, although the company has not yet got the final go-ahead.
The environmental group Friends of the Earth is among those opposed to the plan, which they fear would harm wildlife and air quality in the New Forest.
The report, published on Thursday, criticises the government for not clarifying how much extra capacity is needed or how much it would cost to build.
But it does not specify a location for the new port.
A year-long independent inquiry into the Dibden Bay plan ended last December and a decision is due in the New Year.
ABP says the development would create an estimated 3,000 jobs in the area.
