Murder theory over bedroom death

Wieslaw Filus

Post-mortem tests on a man found in Hampshire have revealed he died from a brain haemorrhage caused by an assault.

Polish national Wieslaw Filus, 45, was found by his flatmates in his bedroom in Denzil Avenue, Southampton, on Saturday morning.

Police believe he may have been attacked locally some time between Friday night and Saturday morning.

Officers said the motive for the assault was unknown. They want to hear from anyone who may have seen Mr Filus.

He has been described as white, 5ft 6in (1.67m), clean shaven and with thick dark hair.

He was last known to be wearing a dark blue fleece with the writing "NIC - working in partnership with Tesco", dark blue jeans and white trainers with the England three lions logo.

Police said Mr Filus left his flat at about 1900 BST on Friday and returned home in the early hours.

He did not tell his flatmates where he was going.

Attack theory

Detectives are trawling through CCTV footage to try to find out where he went and who he was with in the hours before his death.

Chief Insp Alison Scott said: "I am appealing directly to members of the community, particularly the Polish community, to help us piece together Mr Filus's last movements.

"One theory we are working on is that he left his flat and was assaulted before managing to make his way home and sadly dying in his bedroom."

She urged anyone who saw a fight take place in Southampton city centre to contact police.

"I'd like to reassure members of the Newtown community that we are doing everything we can to try and catch the person responsible for Mr Filus' death," Ms Scott added.
